Totes and containers

A tote is a moving container: a box or bin that carries picked goods from the aisles to the packing bench. Unlike a bin, it has no fixed place — Fiftify tracks what is inside it and which order that belongs to.

For a single order picked by hand, a tote is optional — the picker carries the units over.

They stop being optional the moment you batch picks. In a batch, one walk collects units for several orders, and something has to keep them apart. That is a tote per order: scan the tote as the pick destination, and Fiftify remembers which order its contents belong to.

Warehouses → Layout & Bins → Totes. A new warehouse has none, and the page says so: “Create totes to use them during batch picking.”

Give each tote a name that matches the label physically on it. The name is what pickers scan and what the pack task will show as its Source, so TOTE-01 on the screen must be TOTE-01 on the plastic.

1. The picker scans the tote as the destination when starting a pick.
2. Picked units are recorded into the tote.
3. Completing the pick names the tote as the handoff location.
4. The pack task for that order shows the tote as its Source — the packer knows exactly which container to fetch.
5. Packing empties it, and the tote returns to the rack for the next pick.

Pallets work the same way for bulky picks and large batches, and appear alongside totes when choosing a pick destination.

• Scanning a tote that is not empty. Fiftify asks whether the units were moved there or whether this is a second container for the same pick — answer honestly, do not guess.
• Reusing a tote before packing. The pack task still expects to find the goods there. Empty totes into their parcel before sending them back to the rack.
